Question: Can you tell me how to handle this home security system issue?
(Posted by: IWannaGoHome on 2009-09-26 11:57:51)
I have an ADT system installed here that I never use; can't afford the monthly fee and the witch I bought the house from never left me any info about it as promised. It must be ten years old; I've been here six. I am having my sliding glass doors replaced, and there are sensors on it. I'm supposed to have the sensors removed, but I'm wondering - - is there a point? System must be outmoded, can't afford to have ADT come here to do that on top of all the other expense. How is it hooked up? Can the installers just dispose of the old doors with the sensor on it without causing a problem? Thank you. |

I recommedn finding the control box which contains all of the wiring for the system. Snip every single wire. If anything starts beeping, just rip it out of the wall., |

If you're not going to be monitoring the system or having it removed there is little point in replacing the sensor. There are two types of sensors. A wireless system would have batteries which should be removed of and disposed of properly. Someone with a similar system may be able to make use of the sensor. Otherwise once the batteries are out it can go to the trash or recycler along with the door. If it is a simple wired magnetic switch there is nothing which would be considered an environmental hazard. It can be tossed into the trash or disposed of along with the door. |

Since you stated that you don't use it why don't you contact ADT and cancel your service. |

If you haven't already done so, find the controller for the system. Mine is in a closet. Disconnect the battery and unplug the telephone line. You can then snip and cap the wires or just leave it. The sensor on the sliding glass doors is probably just a contact sensor. When the remove the doors, snip the wires and toss it. But don't remove the wiring in case you want to sell the house and prospective buyers ask about security. |
